A systematic approach and know-how avoided new equipment to increase the capacity and reliability of an existing UPW system

Location: USA
Project Name: UPW Loop B Capacity Upgrade
Project Scale: 13 Unit Operations

Challenge

The client faced capacity and quality problems and anticipated the addition of new tools to a UPW system which would lead to challenges in terms of pressure and flow control as well as challenges with system capacity. Identification of equipment, control and piping bottlenecks resulting from increased flow through a UPW loop was necessary.

Barriers

The client lacked the insight and the tools to fully understand the current system’s capacity and what changes needed to be made to improve system reliability. With the imminent addition of new tools, the client faced increased capacity necessity but was uncertain how to deal with it.

Solution

FTD helped to determine: current capacity, current operational challenges, future capacity and pressure needs, and how to meet the capacity demands.

Leveraging the know-how and experience of doing this type of work throughout the industry, FTD took a systematic approach to understand the existing system and to define the changes to the system required to support future requirements. The distribution system was analyzed and changes to the pressure control scheme were made, allowing for more reliable and precise pressure control.

Impact

Through the expertise provided by FTD, the client was able to increase capacity with no addition of UPW equipment and only minor modifications to the distribution system. Without the added knowledge of FTD, the client may have unnecessarily incurred substantial costs to upgrade or add UPW equipment.
